Here, i will discuss about the John Ruskin was an English writer, philosopher, art critic and polymath of the Victorian era.

👉EARLY LIFE :

John Ruskin (1819-1900) was an English writer, art critic, and social thinker of the Victorian era. He is known for his significant contributions to various fields, including art, architecture, and social commentary. Ruskin's work was influential in the 19th century and continues to be studied today.


Ruskin was born into the commercial classes of the prosperous and powerful Britain of the years immediately following the Napoleonic Wars.

His father, John James Ruskin, was a Scots wine merchant who had moved to London and made a fortune in the sherry trade. John
Ruskin, an only child, was largely educated at home, and comprehensive knowledge of the Bible by his piously Protestant mother.

MERREGE TO ' EFFIE GRAY': 

During 1847, Ruskin became closer to Euphemia "Effie" Gray, the daughter of family friends. It was for her that Ruskin had written The King of the Golden River. The couple were engaged in October. They married on 10 April 1848.
      The marriage was unhappy, with Ruskin    reportedly being cruel to Effie and distrustful of her. The marriage was neverconsummated and was annulled six years later in 1854.

👉Art criticism:
Ruskin's writings on art, particularly his book "Modern Painters," had a profound impact on the appreciation and understanding of art. He emphasized the importance of detailed observation and the connection between art and nature.

👉Architecture: 
He also wrote extensively about architecture and was a proponent of the Gothic Revival movement. His book "The Stones of Venice" is a significant work in this regard.

👉Social Critique: 
Ruskin was a social critic who expressed concern about the negative effects of industrialization and the degradation of society. He wrote about the need for a more just and humane society.

👉Educational Reform: 
He played a role in the reform of education in the United Kingdom and established the Guild of St George to promote his ideals of art, education, and social improvement.

👉Ruskin in the 21st century

In 2019, Ruskin200 was inaugurated as a year-long celebration marking the bicentenary of Ruskin's birth.

Admirers and scholars of Ruskin can visit the Ruskin Library at Lancaster University, Ruskin's home, Brantwood, and the Ruskin Museum, both in Coniston in the English Lake District. All three mount regular exhibitions open to the public all the year round. Barony House in Edinburgh is home to a descendant of John Ruskin. She has designed and hand painted various friezes in honour of her ancestor and it is open to the public. Ruskin's Guild of St George continues his work tody, in education, the arts, crafts, and the rural economy.

He died at Brantwood from influenza on 20 January 1900 at the age of 80.
